![]() ![]() In the search for food, a silver back is responsible for leading its family to where food is enough for all members. They are given care by their mothers from the day of birth to age of 2.5 or 3 three years. ![]() Gorilla infants start feeding at a stage of six months taking simple plant parts up to an age of 8 when they start feeding on everything. They don’t like fights unless it’s needed like any separation of group to form a new one by another dominant male from the same group, during copulation since it’s only the silver back that is supposed to mate with all females in a group or scarcity of food in the area. ![]() Each gorilla family is led by one dominant male called silverback. Just like other primate species, Mountain gorillas live in families, also called troops or groups. They get their food mainly using hands and lips. They are the largest primates that weigh about 195 kilograms which makes make to be the strongest primates than chimpanzees. Mountain gorillas can move for up to a kilometer or less per day looking for food and they can’t feed in the same place for two days just like nesting / sleeping. Due to the fact that they feed much on water-rich food, these animals rarely drink water and the dew they find while feeding in the morning also affects their rate of drinking water.Īs far as their feeding habits are concerned, they depend on different plants for food nutrients for example, they can eat one plant for leaves and another one for roots. Males can eat 34 kilograms of vegetation per day whereas female can consume up to 18 kilograms making a difference of 16kgs that males consume more than females. Mountain gorillas as well eat a lot of food and males feed more than females. However, they feed 3% of flowers and fruits, 7% roots, 86% made up of fresh leaves, grass, vines, stem and the remaining percentage covers the diet that they get from insects like termites, ants, snails and more. Therefore, most of their diet depends on plants where they feed on more than 140 plant species. Mgahinga gorilla national Park is also home of interesting golden monkeys and hosts three of the Virunga volcanoes namely Gahinga, Sabyinyo and Muhabura mountains.Īdditionally, these endangered mountain gorillas are pure herbivorous that mainly feed on bamboo shoots, stems, leaves, fruits, vines and grass. This number is only recorded in two protected areas – Mgahinga and Bwindi impenetrable national Parks. On the other hand, Uganda is known for harboring a big number of mountain gorillas that make up a total of 500 which are almost a half number of gorillas in the whole world. Rwanda has Volcanoes National Park, Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as Kahuzi-Biega national Park which is the only park that shelters eastern lowland gorillas in East Africa. Congo which has two protected areas harboring both mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas.
